Greetings, Lake Vilbig residents
This letter discusses our September 2023 management efforts. I came out once in September on the 27th. Overall, things look really good. At least it has cooled down some, not much, but some. What we need is rain and a lot of it. I was shocked at the lake level. It appears to be 2-2.5 feet low. The volleyball court is almost out of the water. I had to be careful navigating some areas of the lake. Some areas on the north end where the alligator weed grows were out of water. It has been a few years since I have seen it that low.
On the 27th. Water temperatures are cooling, but not much. I measured water temps of 84 and 85 F all around the lake. Eventually, they will come down. They have to. The less daylight we receive, the cooler the lake will become. But for now, it is still bathtub water. I did observe some fish activity. That is a good thing. pH was still high, at 8.5, and alkalinity was 140. Water clarity was also pretty low; I got 12-18 inches readings. There was a lot of plankton growth—still many geese and some ducks around, but not much else.
