Greetings, Lake Vilbig residents! Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays. Happy New Year!
This letter is to discuss our December management efforts. I came out on December 21st to finish our management efforts for the year. It was a nice December day. The high temperature for the day was in the 50s. Let’s discuss some items about the lake. Lake temperatures have remained very similar since November. Water temp was 51 F. That’s a slight decrease in a month. But it is wintertime. So basically water temps have stabilized for the next few months they might get an Alkalinity was 100 which is right around where it usually is. Alkalinity may change a little colder over the winter but that all depends on the weather. If we get some real cold snaps then it is possible for water to get into the 40s, even high 30’s. We will just have to wait and see what happens. pH was 7.2. Visibility was 45 inches. This is normal as well. Especially for this time of year.
Looks like many, but not all, bird species are back. It appears that the cormorants have not inundated the lake as they have in the past. I have seen plenty around North Texas. So I know they are around. Just feel lucky they haven’t come back in full force on the lake. I can’t pinpoint the exact species of gull that resides on lake Vilbig every winter, but it does appear to be a migratory gull. So much like the cormorants and pelicans, they are a winter species of bird that likes to hang out at Vilbig every year. I have not seen any evidence of otters this year. Everything else looks really good. I will be back in January 2021. Let 2020 be gone.

Watercolor: green/brown
Water clarity: clear
Water surface: clear
Water conditions: calm
Water odor: slightly fishy
Water temperature: 50℉
Conductivity: 620 µS/cm (good)
Dissolved Oxygen: 9.3 mg/L (very good)
pH: 8.1 (normal)
Water transparency: 2 ft 2 inches
Lake observations: Wind from the west-northwest at 6 mph. The lake level is close to normal. I did not see any algae present. It has been 11 days since measurable precipitation. Everything looks normal for this time of year.
